- 1 1/2 pounds ground beef (80% lean)
- 4 slices rye bread
- 4 slices Swiss cheese
- 1/2 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided
- Salt, to taste
- Black pepper, to taste
- Dash of Worcestershire sauce
Steps
- 1 Season the ground beef with salt, pepper, and a dash of Worcestershire sauce. Form into 4 patties.
- 2 Heat 2 tablespoons butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for 3-4 minutes per side, until cooked through.
- 3 In the same skillet, add the remaining 2 tablespoons butter and the onions. Sauté until caramelized, about 5-7 minutes.
- 4 While the onions cook, toast the rye bread in a separate skillet with a little butter until golden brown.
- 5 Place a slice of Swiss cheese on each patty and let it melt.
- 6 Assemble the sandwiches: place a patty on each slice of toasted bread, top with caramelized onions and another slice of bread.
- 7 Butter the outside of each sandwich and grill in a skillet until the bread is crispy and golden.
