Mango

The mango is a tropical fruit renowned for its luscious sweetness and vibrant hues. Originating in South Asia, it has become a beloved ingredient in cuisines around the world, from India to Mexico. Its flavor is often described as a delightful balance of sweet and tangy, with hints of peach, pineapple, and citrus. The texture of ripe mango is smooth and juicy, offering a satisfying chewiness that melts in the mouth. In cooking, mango behaves well in both raw and cooked applications, lending its sweetness to salads, salsas, and desserts, while also holding up well in curries and chutneys where it softens and intensifies in flavor.

Notes

To choose a ripe mango, look for a fruit that yields slightly to gentle pressure and has a fragrant aroma at the stem end. Avoid those with wrinkled skin or excessive softness. Store unripe mangoes at room temperature until they ripen, then transfer them to the refrigerator to prolong freshness for up to five days. Always wash mangoes before cutting to remove any surface dirt. Be mindful of potential allergic reactions, as mangoes can cause skin irritation in some individuals due to urushiol, the same compound found in poison ivy.
